Submission Guidelines

Please note: For reasons beyond our control, Onça’s publishing program is on hold. Our submission guidelines below are for reference only, and until further notice, we are not considering any submissions for publication. We expect to resume our publishing program within a few months.

Our publishing program is very small—we plan to publish one or two titles per year for the next few years. With our 2017 title in production, we are eagerly looking for our 2018 titles.

We accept unsolicited manuscripts, and will review and respond to all submissions as time allows. If you have not yet, we suggest you get acquainted with our press by reading about us and browsing our titles.

Our primary interest is in literary fiction, fantasy and science fiction—and especially a combination. While we are willing to consider foreign writers, grant requirements dictate that the majority of our published authors be Canadian. We will gladly publish both new and established writers.

We are actively looking for novels and short story collections. We do not accept single short story submissions except as a response to one of our calls for submission, which we will announce for our open anthologies. If we have any active calls, they will be listed here. We may also consider works of poetry, creative non-fiction or other genres if we find that the work suits our mandate.

How to submit

We only accept electronic submissions. If necessary, we will make an exception—but email us first. We suggest you begin by sending us a letter of inquiry, including a chapter outline (or similar), a writing sample and a summary of your previous publishing credits, if any. We expect all manuscripts to follow William Shunn’s format guidelines.
