Onça’s owner shed simas is a designer and editor with over four years’ experience in the book publishing industry, supported by a Master of Publishing and a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Onça is proficient in long-form text design and typesetting. Simas began designing publications as a Visual Arts student at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. He built on this foundation during his graduate studies at Simon Fraser University. Simas’s designs for the trade emphasize practicality and readability while complementing the spirit of the text with the page layout. Simas is also skilled at faithful and efficient print-to-ebook conversion workflows.
Some of Onça Design’s most notable designs include David Zieroth’s the bridge from day to night and the page layouts of Jennifer Manuel’s debut novel The Heaviness of Things That Float (D&M, 2016) and Drew Hayden Taylor’s science fiction short story collection Take Us to Your Chief (D&M, 2016). Shed Simas is a fan both of stories and of The Chicago Manuel of Style. He began flexing his literary critic muscles in undergraduate Creative Writing courses, then solidified those skills during his Master’s degree. He loves to help authors communicate their ideas in a clear and engaging way, whether it be in fiction or non-fiction.
Onça Editing’s most notable work is the substantive edit for Simon Rose’s juvenile fantasy novel The Sphere of Septimus (Tradewind, 2015). Onça has also copyedited multiple books. see the full portfolio.
