Spring 2023 books!

Summer is well underway, and I’ve just updated my portfolio with six new books that I’m proud to have worked on! Read on for a quick look at each one, and follow the links to see more of the designs.

This Place Is Who We Are: Stories of Indigenous Leadership, Resilience, and Connection to Homelands by Katherine Palmer Gordon

Cover and text design

I was honoured to work on this beautiful book. Since it is a larger size than I usually get to work with, I was able to get a little creative in how the pages were laid out. I'm especially happy with the chapter-opening spreads.

Few type families support as many characters as this superfamily does, and character support is crucial when working with so many Indigenous names.

A Kid’s Guide to Plants of the Pacific Northwest: with Cool Facts, Activities and Recipes by Philippa Joly

Cover and text design

This book encourages children to explore the natural world with plant profiles and activities. I tried to highlight that by using bright but natural colours and a fun title typeface. The author’s photos and illustrations also play a huge part. Thet made even me want to spend more time out with nature!

The Science and Superpowers of Seaweed: A Guide for Kids by Amanda Swinimer

Cover and text design

This was my second time designing an Amanda Swinimer book, and this was an even bigger challenge than the last! With sections of extended prose, short phyco-facts, seaweed profiles, recipes and activities for kids and multiple types of sidebar, plus photographs, illustrations and icons, it was a lot to balance!

Snorkelling Adventures Around Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands: The Ultimate Guide by Sara Ellison

Cover and text design

I had a lot of fun working on this book. The sections are colour coded to help readers navigate the destination listings, and the colours pair beautifully with the author’s wonderful underwater photographs.

the trick of staying and leaving by David Zieroth

This was my third time designing a cover for one of David’s books! The photograph was taken by the author, and I gave it some small adjustments to colour and contrast.
