Fall 2023 books!

Fall is officially over, and I worked on a lot of exciting books that came out over the last few months. Here are a few highlights I’ve added to my portfolio.

The Wild Horses of the Chilcotin: Their History and Future by Wayne McCrory

Dust jacket and text design

Heavily illustrated books are fun to work on because you get to do more unusual things with the layout. And this book sure was heavily illustrated, with nearly one hundred photographs, many of them beautiful.

Hot Springs of Western Canada: A Complete Guide, 4th Edition by David Woodsworth & Glenn Woodsworth

Cover and text design

I had a unique experience designing this cover. I’m used to making a few versions to start, and then slowly refining and trying different options as I understand better and better what the publisher is looking for. It usually takes several rounds to get the right cover. But this time, my favourite design from the first set I submitted was accepted and ultimately printed with almost no changes!

Dream House: A Poem by Cathy Stonehouse

Cover and text design

The Escher-like typeface Macula felt like the perfect pair for this surprising and surreal book-length poem. Placing the image and title sideways on the cover adds to the wonky sense of the unexpected.

Once Upon an Effing Time: A Novel by Buffy Cram

Text design

It is not common for novels to be typeset with a ragged right margin—that is, where the ending of each line doesn’t line up perfectly in a block. I chose to do so here for two reasons: The first is practical, as the novel contains many very short paragraphs that would be difficult to work with in justified text. The second is thematic, as the ragged margin reflects the punky and strange lives of the characters.
