Jekyll & Hyde

In 2014, I thought I wanted to become a publisher, and not “just” a book designer. To that end, my first project under the Onça Publishing name was a special edition of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson.

About the Book

Jekyll & Hyde, as it is frequently called, was first published in 1886. Mr. Gabriel Utterson, a lawyer, investigates a series of peculiar circumstances involving the respectable Dr. Henry Jekyll and his unlikely protégé, the despicable Mr. Edward Hyde. As the story develops, we slowly learn the surprising true nature of the relationship between Jekyll and Hyde: through a series of chemical experiments, Jekyll has incurred a form of shapeshifting dissociative identity disorder—Jekyll and Hyde are in fact the same person.

The Onça edition is carefully designed to reflect this nature. The contrast of black on white is focal; a comfortably proportionate page is marred by unsettlingly tight type; and a pure white sleeve offers a window of violence, through which the solid unmarked black of the case can be seen.

Copies of this edition are still available.

Wall of Awesome

This project was crowdfunded through Indiegogo. Please join me in thanking the contributors. I am eternally grateful to these early Onça supporters. Their names are recorded here for posterity and bragging rights.

Changed your mind about being anonymous? Want to change how your name is recorded? Did you contribute in someone else’s name and need me to add their name to the list? Just get in touch and let me know. Make sure to include your name as it currently appears, your contribution email (the one on your Indiegogo account) and what you would like the new name to be.
